Play Patio
A modular playhouse system inspired by children's building blocks, transforming the patio into an active space for play, gathering, and community.
Project overview
This project rethinks the patio as an active social space rather than a passive shared ground. While traditional patios accommodate multiple users, interactions between them often remain limited. This proposal introduces play as a catalyst to transform that condition.
Inspired by children’s building blocks, a series of modular components - triangular, arched, and semi-circular - are developed as both furniture and spatial elements. Each piece can be assembled, rotated, or reconfigured, allowing the space to continuously adapt to different uses, from seating and resting to climbing, playing, and gathering.
At the center of the patio, these components come together to form a small playhouse, acting as a focal point that attracts both children and adults. Its bright colors and familiar geometry evoke childhood memories, encouraging spontaneous interaction among users of different ages.
Through simple operations of combination and transformation, the project generates a flexible environment where space is not fixed, but continuously shaped by its users. The patio becomes a shared ground for play, communication, and community, redefining everyday social space through participation.
