Lonely Library

A library organized as a spatial gradient between collective activity and solitude, shaped through concentric rings, a spiral sequence, and filtered light.

Project overview

This project investigates how varying degrees of solitude can be generated within a shared public environment. Rather than separating spaces into fixed categories, the design creates a continuous spatial gradient between collective and individual use.

The organization begins with concentric rings that structure the program according to levels of openness. These rings are then transformed into a spiral system, allowing spaces to shift gradually in height, enclosure, and visual connection. As visitors move through the building, the experience transitions from open, highly interactive areas to more enclosed and introspective environments.

Above, a layered roof structure filters light into the interior, reinforcing the spatial hierarchy through changing atmospheres of brightness and shadow. The interplay between form, light, and enclosure further defines the sense of privacy within each zone.

Through the transformation of a simple geometric system, the project produces a diverse range of spatial conditions within a unified form. The library becomes not only a place for knowledge, but a landscape of social and individual experience, where solitude and interaction coexist.
